He heats the horseshoe or other piece of steel in the forge until it is red hot, then holding the hot shoe with tongs, he uses his
hammer and other tools to shape the shoe and create designs. For larger items, he welds the pieces together.
They are then buffed and varnished.
If you want a custom hoof pick made out of one of your own horse's shoes as a momento,
he'd be happy to oblige. You can send us your horseshoe(s), and let us know if you want a horse's head or Indian head-dress
design. He can also stamp a name or initials into the hot steel, if desired.
He also makes custom frames which you can
use for photos, prints or mirrors, and unique trophy buckle display stands. See examples of his work on this and the following
pages.
Gilbert Roy has been a horseshoer for over thirty years. During that time, he has learned to work with steel and the forge.
During the winter, when he has more free time, he creates pieces of art out of horseshoes.
Hand forged, each piece is
unique: no two creations are exactly alike.
